Hiya, Rural Sprout readers,Â
We’ve been experiencing the oddest weather. In last week’s newsletter, I noted how I was able to have a fire in the fireplace; this week, we had temperatures reaching 80 degrees. And it will continue right into the first days of
November.Â
Now, I know this is an unpopular opinion, but I’m ready for cold weather.Â
I love winter and snow and all that comes with it. So, this unseasonably warm weather is starting to get to me. I have a whole closet full of hand-knit sweaters, just waiting to be worn, not to mention the one I’m currently
knitting.Â
It seems like the cold weather shows up later and later each year.Â
But as the old saying goes, “Make hay while the sun shines.” I got one of my raised beds all setup and filled with soil, mushroom compost and well-aged manure. I poked some garlic cloves in it, some of my favorite carrots that do best in the fall, and some spinach, kale, broccoli rabe and Asian
broccoli.  I considered planting some lettuces, but salads are kind of boring when you can’t grow tomatoes to put in them.  I decided, instead, to stick with more hearty greens that will go better with heavier winter fare. And if that cold weather ever does decide to show up, I’ve got hoops set up, and everything will go under cover.Â
I’m looking forward to a little winter gardening before I set up my other beds in the spring.
Now, if only I had some snow to trudge through to get to my raised bed… Â
