Hello Rural Sprout readers,Â
I finally got my winter weather! I can’t tell you how many times I’ve stopped when passing a window simply to stand, gazing out at the wind whirling the snow around the yard. I’ve been grateful for my closet full of hand-knit
sweaters.Â
How was your holiday? Did you all have a nice Thanksgiving?Â
I had a houseful of kids. The oldest and her husband, the two teenage boys, and I had a “quiet” Thanksgiving together. Quiet in that we didn’t have a ton of activities planned, and we all just wanted to enjoy some relaxing time
together.  Less quiet with all the noisy games of Slap Jack played at the dining room table and having five people under one roof in a small house. Â
It was lovely – a true reminder of all the things I’m thankful for.Â
I poked my head under the poly covering of my raised bed on Friday. It’s been down in the teens at night, so I was a little nervous. But all my little seedlings are growing steadily along. Kale, turnips, radishes, carrots, broccoli rabe, cabbage and
Chinese broccoli are all coming up and looking good. I have a feeling that right about the time I can’t stand to look at another Christmas cookie the radishes will be ready.Â
And from there, the rest will follow—a small gift of fresh, green food in the middle of winter.Â
By the way, I got my first seed catalog in the mail this week. Now, come on, folks. And we say the retailers push Christmas on us too soon!Â
