Greetings, Rural Sprout Readers,
I’m writing to you from the beautiful hills of the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon. Tufts of fog are still clinging to the tops of the emerald-green mountains. It’s our annual trip to the Susquehannock Trail Performance Rally – otherwise known as that thing
where people drive much too fast through the middle of the woods.
It’s rainy and cool, and it should make for a muddy race, which is always good fun.
It also means when we get home later today, I’ll have quite a bit of weeding to do. It seems that no matter how good the weather is for the garden, the weeds are always what grow the fastest. And that’s okay.
I used to hate weeding by hand.
But these days I quite enjoy it. It’s a chance to slow down for a bit and collect my thoughts or maybe listen to an audiobook. There is something peaceful and humbling about kneeling in the dirt and plucking crabgrass and purslane out of each garden
bed. It’s funny how many laborious chores I’ve grown to love over the years. Things that I found annoying, tiresome or aggravating in the past have now become intentional practices of love and self-care for myself and my home. Folding laundry, washing the dishes by hand, dusting, weeding - each of these has
become an island of quiet thoughtfulness in my otherwise busy days.
How about you, my friends? Have you found yourself enjoying something that is frequently seen as a tiresome chore?
As you head into another week, I would encourage you to look for peace in the moments of your day, wherever you may find them. I’ll see you all on Wednesday. I
hope your garden is doing well.
