Hiya, Rural Sprout readers,
I’ve been noticing a change in my neck of the woods and it makes me wonder if fall isn’t here early. There are just too many signs for it not to be fall.  The nights get cooler quicker, and they’re chillier, too. The mornings have been foggy and crisp; we’re talking throw a sweatshirt on to sit on the porch with my coffee crisp. I noticed when I was driving the other day that the car in front of me was kicking up leaves. Even the bugs of summer sound different; less insistent, they sound like toys whose batteries are dying.Â
I’ve skipped shorts and opted for jeans every single day this week.Â
Of course, I say all this knowing it’s supposed to get up to 90 this coming week. But still, there comes a point in every summer when you just know – it’s over.Â
Summer is on the way out, and fall is on the way in.Â
And to be honest, I’m kind of looking forward to some cool weather crops. I love frost-kissed Brussels sprouts and hearty winter squash. I can start to grow lettuces again, which will be great for some excellent soup and salad combos as we finish out the
growing season.  It’s funny; we’re heading into that period where things start winding down, yet there are still things to grow. It seems as though no matter how late in the season it is, there’s always one more little run of veggies you can squeeze in.  What are some of your favorite things to grow and eat in
the fall? Are you planting a fall garden or getting a jump on some spring crops now? Who else is looking forward to crisp, juicy apples and bright orange pumpkins? Â
