It’s that time of year, Rural Sprout readers,
The rush of the planting season is over, our gardens are growing along nicely, we’re preserving what we can preserve and my “busy” season has slowed down enough for me to go on vacation.Â
The family and I are headed to the lake!Â
I love how you can just say "the lake" and it means any lake, anywhere. (Also, I clearly need a vacation, when I was rereading this I read lake as kale.) Â This
is going to be a relaxing, restful vacation. We do plenty of sightseeing throughout the year. But not this coming week.  This is one of those family vacations where you pack everything in and stay put for the duration. We’re all looking forward to swimming, sitting by a campfire, finishing a book or getting that knitting project off the needles finally. (And mostly, sleeping
in.)  The boys are planning on eking out the last few days of good summer weather before they head back to that six-letter word I’m not allowed to say: P-R-I-S-O…wait, sorry, no that’s how they describe it.Â
Yes, I hate to say it, but it's certainly starting to feel as though summer is coming to an end. The light in the evenings has that particular golden hue that comes just on the heels of summer. The trees in my backyard are the washed out green they get
just before they start to turn. And there was mist on the hills when I had my coffee on the front porch the other morning.  By this time next week, I hope to be paddling in a canoe, and spotting the first trees starting to change color in the Fingers Lake region. I hope you’re all doing well, and I’ll be back in a bit. I’m sure I’ll have plenty of green beans that will need to be picked immediately upon
my return. Â
