Hiya, Rural Sprout readers,Â
Despite what the calendar says, spring officially arrived this week. Â I can tell because my allergies started acting up. The trees are exploding, and the air is
a veritable pollen buffet, ready to make your eyes water, your nose itch and your throat scratchy all day. Ah, spring!
On the other hand, I’ve been enjoying all the lovely edible “weeds” in my yard.
I’ve had a salad every day this week made with things picked just outside my front door: chickweed, dandelion greens and bittercress. It’s been lovely. And tasty!  With my move, I didn’t have much time to spend on a spring garden this year. But after foraging in my yard, I’m beginning to rethink all the time and effort I put into growing early crops each season.  In the future, I might cut down on what I grow at the beginning of the year and enjoy what pops up in my unmowed lawn.
In the meantime, we’ve been hardening off the seedlings.Â
I’ve been consistently pinching back all my cucurbits, as they seem bound and determined to start flowering before they’re in the ground.
Readers, you would be proud of me.Â
I was thinking about putting a few plants in the ground this week. Surely, Faux Spring has passed, and we’re ready to put seedlings out now. But I resisted the urge (got busy) and sure enough, another cold snap is on the
way.  This might be the first spring where I haven’t killed any seedlings by putting them out too early.
But, as The Engineer reminded me, “There’s still time.” Ha!
