Greetings, Rural Sprout readers,
Guess what? We got our first snow! Of course, it didn’t stick, but it came down heavily enough to look like a Christmas card for a bit. It was beautiful.
It was a bit of a shock to the system, coming from a weekend of weather in the low 80s.
I keep seeing warnings about this El Nino winter headed our way. While it looks like we’ll get less snow up here in the north, it will be wetter down south. And for many states, that’s a good thing. It will help to alleviate drought conditions. I know many gardeners struggled with
drought this season.
Hopefully, this winter will help by replenishing water tables.
As a kid, I remember several summers on my dad’s homestead when the spring and creek ran dry. It’s a disconcerting thing to turn the faucet on and have nothing come out. I remember Dad explaining why there was no water and my confusion about why we couldn’t just use the hose instead.
It was
an interesting lesson for a ten-year-old, realizing how much we rely on running water, even on a simple off-the-grid homestead, from toothbrushing to cooking to flushing the toilet. We would load up the back of the pickup truck with gallons of water.
It was always a relief when we finally got a good, long period of soaking rain.
The creek would reappear, and suddenly, the magic of running water was part of our cabin again. Come on, El Nino, I know a few states that could use a little help.
