Happy Sunday, Rural Sprout Readers,
Â
It seems that another week has sped by. Here in the states, we will be celebrating a day of remembrance tomorrow on Memorial Day.Â
Â
If your week was anything like mine, you probably ticked off quite a few things on your to-do list (like getting the flowers planted on the balcony) only to add just as many new items. Warm weather always brings the season of ‘doing.’Â
Â
Â
Â
I sat down yesterday to put a few dates on the calendar for summer and realized my summer is already packed, even though it hasn’t started yet.Â
Â
I’m tired just thinking about it.Â
Â
Over the past decade or so, I’ve become an advocate for slowing down and making time to be still. But I find it difficult to do this time of year. Everything demands your attention. And it all has such a sense of urgency – hurry, save the date, RSVP.
Â
I checked the garden the other day, and I noticed flea beetles all over my beautiful eggplant transplants. Unreal, I thought; I just put the silly things in the ground.
Â
Now, I know if I want spicy eggplant with garlic sauce and ratatouille later this summer, I need to make sure I deal with these tiny, munching pests right away. The sooner, the better!
Â
But here it is, Sunday morning, and I still haven’t found a spare second to take a bottle of neem oil out to the garden.Â
Â
Along with making time to be still, I find the longer I garden, the more I approach it with a Doris Day attitude.Â
Â
That is to say, whatever will be, will be.Â
Â
I’m sure I’ll get around to spraying the eggplant down with neem oil, but until I do, I’m not overly worried about losing my plants. I planted four eggplants, and if worse comes to worst, there’s always the farmer’s market.Â
During the pandemic, when we were stuck inside, limited to where we could go and who we could see, it forced many of us to take a good hard look at the superfluous things in our lives and get crystal clear on what is important.Â
Â
I find that lesson seems to fade a bit with each passing month.Â
Â
So, if you will excuse me, my friends, I have some important things to do, like getting a second cup of coffee and watching the chickens roam the yard while I make some room on my calendar to be still this summer.Â
