Happy Sunday, Rural Sprout Readers,
With your garden buttoned up and temperatures dropping, what are you doing now the growing season is over? Do you rest and take it easy? Is there a specific fall or winter hobby you enjoy? Do you get your gardening fix by growing food indoors or tending to houseplants?
I think I’ve mentioned a few hundred times that we’re coming up on my favorite season. I love the cold and snow; I find both to be wholly restorative.
It’s this slight pause between the end of the warm weather and the hustle and bustle of the holiday season when I can finally catch up on all those little things indoors I’ve been meaning to do but didn’t get around to this summer.
I don’t know about you, but I usually feel guilty fussing over indoor jobs when the sun is shining and there’s work to be done outside.
While many ascribe to the notion of spring cleaning, now is when I do my big clean and declutter. I’ve often wondered how many other gardeners do the same.
Now that the outdoor chore list is a bit shorter and the daylight to do those chores is shorter too, are you busy indoors?
This week I got out my winter clothes and put away the summer items.
It’s always a great time to let go of things that I no longer use (or fit into, if I’m honest). I get this crazy nesting thing going, and suddenly it’s not just my closet I’m decluttering and organizing. The whole house gets a good sprucing up, and several trips to drop off bags at Good Will usually take place.
I dragged out my favorite winter coat, an old, red-plaid Woolrich hunting coat that I found in an antique store many years ago. Talk about how they don’t make ‘em like they used to anymore; I think this thing weighs about 12 lbs. and stops the wind in its tracks. Of course, the next day, the weather warmed up, and it was in the 60s for the rest of the week.
Ah well, isn’t that the way it always goes?
I hope you’re successfully tackling your own neglected indoor to-do list and finding ways to rest and enjoy the season as well. Let’s all enjoy this pause before the hustle and bustle of the holidays.
We had some helpful articles show up this past week. We’ve got some great pieces lined up for the coming week, too. I’ll be posting a piece about how to properly store pantry staples to get the best shelf-life and flavor, including some handy tips to help you organize your pantry - yet another indoor job that’s a good one to tackle when the snow starts to fly.
